The last shoe review I dropped was the Newton Energy NR, one of my favorite road shoes of 2013. I thought I’d drop a trail shoe this round. Not just any trail shoe, but the BEAST that is the Salomon Fellraiser! This thing was built for rough conditions and muddy trails. The extremely aggressive outsole, the beefy upper and all the elements that make this shoe a tank combine to provide a protected, secure ride through just about anything.
I spent some time with this shoe on SoCal singletrack, but I don’t think that’s what it’s suited for at all. There’s just not enough give in the soil to really let the outsole shine. Once I took it onto Yosemite trails and some singletrack up at Big Bear, things changed and the shoe began to come alive. I won’t say that this is the shoe I’d run long in or race in, but it definitely could get the job done in a pinch. Well done, Salomon.
